Nebraska's Athletic Director Trev Alberts is expected to depart, leaving the university in a leadership crisis with a new chancellor and interim system president. Alberts was a candidate for high-profile positions before his surprising exit, causing confusion and instability within the department. The university is now faced with finding an interim AD during a critical time for the sports programs.
With Trev Alberts out, Nebraska is left scrambling for answers — and stability https://t.co/zDjiPJHeAT
ICYMI | Believe it or not, yesterday did, in fact, happen. Nebraska’s Trev Alberts is leaving for the oilier pastures of Texas A&M. The biggest question we all have: Why? My column from yesterday’s brouhaha: https://t.co/N5lsAVMgCY
Fred Hoiberg is in Minneapolis getting ready to coach in the Big Ten Tournament. And then the NCAA Tournament. Biggest, and most exciting, stretch of his Nebraska tenure. And he has no boss. Trev Alberts is gone and an Interim AD has yet to be named.
Whatever it is that’s happening with Trev Alberts, I can tell you it’s caught many important people at Nebraska by surprise. “What the heck’s going on?” replied via text one of the most important figures in the department, someone close to Alberts who’d seemingly be in the know.
Trev Alberts' expected departure made me think of this piece I did in 2021 about Nebraska's first decade in the Big Ten and all the administrative flux. They finally seemed to have stability with the top programs and AD ... and now this. https://t.co/VAV0M9Wx6R
The Trev Alberts news seems surprising, but he was in the running to be CFP exec director and had even looked into the Big Ten commissioner job when it was open.
While waiting for something official on Trev Alberts, it's impossible not to consider Nebraska's leadership situation -- a new campus chancellor in Rodney Bennett and an interim system president in Chris Kabourek. An AD search at this time would be problematic.
