The Mountain West Conference achieved a historic milestone by securing six bids to the NCAA Tournament, a record for the league. Teams from New Mexico, San Diego State, Colorado State, Utah State, Nevada, and Boise State have been selected to participate. Despite this achievement, there has been significant criticism regarding the seeding decisions made by the NCAA selection committee. San Diego State received a 5 seed, while Boise State and Colorado State were both given 10 seeds in play-in games, and Utah State, despite being the regular-season champion, only secured an 8 seed. Nevada was placed as a 10 seed, and New Mexico received an 11 seed, further fueling claims of disrespect towards the conference. The criticism extends to the Big East Conference, which, despite being ranked as the second-best league according to KenPom, only received three bids to the tournament, leading to widespread claims of disrespect towards both conferences by the committee.

New Mexico an 11 seed vs Clemson, SDSU a 5 vs UAB, Reno a 10 vs Dayton, Utah St. an 8 vs TCU, Boise St. and Colorado St. both 10 seeds in play-in games vs Colorado and Virginia, respectively. In the end, not a ton of respect for the Mountain West. Alas...UNLV in NIT at Princeton. https://t.co/bmE5cxdZAj
Why was the Mountain West so disrespected with the seeding? @CBB_Central SOUNDS OFF NOW! WATCH: https://t.co/431QFhRqGF https://t.co/9oQM7YKx2M
Sha on the NCAA snub "Super disappointed, super shocked...I don't think I've ever seen anything like that. The disrespect that the Big East got shown is mind-boggling to me. That's a shame and disrespectful" @SetonHallMBB https://t.co/4JfMNKlvR5
Per the NCAA seed list, the Mountain West's overall seed in the 68-team field (NOTE: New Mexico is listed as an automatic qualifier, though not the league's lowest seed) 18 San Diego State 30 Utah State 37 Nevada 38 Boise State 42 New Mexico 44 Colorado State
This is the first time in conference history that the @MountainWest will send six teams to the men's NCAA tournament.
I wish I had picked up that New Mexico was an 11 seed. If the Lobos did not win the Mountain West tourney they would have been out. Committee was NOT feeling the Mountain West love.
The Mountain West got no respect from the committee. https://t.co/iy5NVkrR5C
Justified outrage coming out of the Big East. A joke they only got three teams. https://t.co/gMHtHQRgmH
March Madness selection committee dissed @MountainWest hoops teams. Yes, six were invited, but seeds are low w/ exception of San Diego State. Boise St and Colorado St have play-in games, while tourney winner New Mexico is 11 seed. https://t.co/ENeJT4Hh3M
Nevada was 37th on overall seed list with Boise State 38th, meaning Pack was one spot away from playing in a First Four game for second straight season. Selection committee clearly wants to see MW do more damage in the NCAA Tournament before treating it like a power conference.
A record six Mountain West teams will play in the NCAA Tournament. Boise State and Colorado State are both in the First Four. Read more https://t.co/gYBeSWImGW
Given New Mexico's seeding and CSU being literally the 68th team selected ... ... that was awfully close to being FOUR-bid Mountain West. 🤨 Pretty questionable job there by the committee, honestly. Severely underplaying what has been the seventh power conference this season.
Six is the most Mountain West teams in the Big Dance since the league sent 5 in 2013. https://t.co/buWSpae2Ah
Big East got seriously disrespected by this committee. https://t.co/vrmlDYXBCr
Was such a “tough to play in” conference as so many games night in and night out were a battle! Committee should be embarrassed putting only 3 teams in! A joke! @BIGEASTMBB @BIGEAST #MarchMadness2024 @MarchMadnessMBB https://t.co/vg9fNzAn3j
Mountain West is going to have to earn it — five of six teams are the lower seed. Still, some interesting matchups and some games that can be won. Nevada will play Dayton, but at least does not have to **go to** Dayton. Story coming.
The NCAA selection committee was clearly unimpressed by the Mountain West. And even less impressed than that by the Big East.
Well ok. MWC got six teams in, but the tourney did them all dirty except SDSU with the seeding. Really doesn't make sense at all. For ex, New Mexico has the same record as SDSU, a NET of 22 (SDSU is 21) and beat SDSU to win the MWC tourney, but got an 11 seed to SDSU's 5? Huh?
Mountain West gets a record six teams in NCAA Tournament. BUT ... Colorado State is the last team in, CSU and Boise State are in play-in games, and MW regular season champion Utah State gets only an 8 seed. The seeds: 5 (SDSU), 8, 10, 10, 10 and 11.
The committee chair flat out called New Mexico a bid stealer. That is ridiculous and, again, shows how little respect the committee had for the conference. I surely hope the MWC teams go out and make the committee look completely out of touch. https://t.co/jPMlaAT9Zs
This team, Virginia, is on the same seed line as Nevada, Boise State and Colorado State and is one seed line ahead of New Mexico, which would have missed the tournament if not for winning the Mountain West championship. https://t.co/cGMrEOPFK3
Niko Medved says he’s shocked at the seedings and felt Mountain West was significantly disrespected https://t.co/ABBqwmvrWA
The committee absolutely shitted on the Mountain West. The games must’ve been on too late for them.
A sweat for Nevada, which was third-to-last team announced. MW was getting no respect (two play-in games), so definitely some nervous moments for Wolf Pack fans. Playing Dayton is a 50-50 game. No. 2 Arizona would likely loom in second round with a win. SLC location ideal. https://t.co/cKg6IQqXEL
Nevada as a 10-seed is shocking. MWC did not have representation on the 2024 Selection Committee and it had to hurt. #MWC
“I am NOT happy about the Mountain West here. They got tremendously under-seeded through and through. I’ve seen that league. Nevada as a 10 is a joke. Colorado State in the Play-In is a joke” - @GoodmanHoops LIVE BRACKET REACTION: https://t.co/431QFhRqGF https://t.co/TyCoN7nEfk
Mountain West gets a record six teams in NCAA Tournament. BUT ... Colorado State is the last team in, CSU and Boise State are in play-in games, and MW regular season champion Utah State gets only an 8 seed. The seeds: 5 (SDSU), 8, 10, 10, 10, 10 and 11.
How does a conference champion with a net ranking of 22 end up as an 11 seed??? WTF. Turns out the Lobos HAD to win the MWC tournament to get in.
The SEC and Big Ten getting FOURTEEN teams in and the Big East getting three is an absolute joke. https://t.co/41JQgqpGUz
The NCAA Selection Committee liked San Diego State. The rest of the Mountain West 👎
Not the strongest day for the committee * Big East getting three teams is a joke * Mountain West has two teams in the "First Four," Nevada as a No. 10 and New Mexico an 11 Both leagues greatly under-valued by the commitee
Now on @njdotcom SNUBBED! -- Seton Hall, St. John’s shut out of the Big Dance https://t.co/ykFlcZxGyr https://t.co/jJIRpvjQ4R
6 teams for Mountain West, 3 for Big East is a joke. Gaming the NET or not. Let's end the idea of East Coast Bias. #SelectionSunday
The Big East, the second-best league in the country according to KenPom, gets only three bids to the NCAA tournament. And all three were seeded on the top-three lines.
Man, the Committee hated the MWC. I mean, they really, really, REALLLLLY hated the MWC.
So, the Mountain West sends six teams to the NCAA Tournament ... but they're basically all seeded lower than they should be.
Big East gets three teams. Second-ranked conference by Ken Pom. League has to be absolutely. furious.
Dayton EASILY clears as a 7-seed hoo man. Nevada a 10. The Mountain West disdain must be accounted for. Get six in, but the seeding is wow.
Given New Mexico's 11-seed and the committee's seeding of the other Mountain West teams, they were apparently nowhere close without the automatic bid.
Boise State and Colorado State in Dayton. San Diego State a 5-seed in UConn's region. Utah State an 8-seed in Purdue's region. We'll see what happens with New Mexico and Nevada but this has been a brutal draw for the Mountain West so far.
What did the Mountain West do to the committee
The Mountain West got punked by this Committee.
NCAA tournament committee: not a fan of the mountain west!
One of my big questions entering today was how the committee would view the Mountain West. Boise State being dropped into the First Four and regular-season champion Utah State getting an 8-seed is interesting. What does that mean for say, Colorado State?
We will hear six teams from the Mountain West called later today during the Selection Show. @ianrsacks breaks down how New Mexico winning the conference tourney cemented the #SixBidMW. https://t.co/QtgxNArJWa
Mountain West teams’ NET/KenPom rankings with ESPN projected seed heading into Selection Sunday: 21/21 — San Diego State (6 seed) 22/23 — New Mexico (9 seed) 27/39 — Boise State (8 seed) 34/36 — Nevada (7 seed) 36/38 — Colorado State (10 seed) 38/48 — Utah State (7 seed)
What a year for the Mountain West. Six bids to the NCAA Tournament! Congrats to all the fans of New Mexico, San Diego State, Colorado State, Utah State, Nevada and Boise State. Pretty darn cool for all of you. Enjoy it.
Hot damn, the Mountain West did it. The six-bid dream has endured and succeeded. One final time to break out this bad boy. https://t.co/eikla9IOeC
