MLB's decision to schedule Opening Day games during the Sweet Sixteen basketball games has sparked criticism. Fans and analysts question the lack of day games and national TV broadcasts, with some pointing out the late start times for events on the East Coast. The timing clash with the basketball games and warmer weather during the day is seen as a misstep by MLB.
At the risk of sounding like grandpa Abraham Simpson, 10pm kickoff times for 2 eastern time zone sweet sixteen teams…is ridiculous! https://t.co/u0S2DdR4NG
MLB having so few day games the first two days of the season is...
So MLB really didn’t have any day games scheduled today? Both afternoon games are makeups. Why would you do this opposite the Sweet 16 games and with weather being warmer during the day?
It’s 11:30 p.m. on the East Coast and the second half of a Sweet 16 game in Boston is just starting, later than a Sweet 16 game currently being played in LA. This makes about as much sense as MLB having just one national TV broadcast on Opening Day.
I’m sure there’s plenty of legalese involved, but how did MLB “#OpeningDay” muster no 1 PM games and only one on ESPN? They used to have games from 1 to midnight
Not really sure why MLB would want to have Opening Day coincide with the Sweet Sixteen. Even just starting one day earlier on a Wednesday would be better. This is not trivial competition.
