In the first quarter of the CFP National Championship game, Michigan outpaced Washington with 229 total yards to 74, including 84 yards on their first drive alone, split into 18 passing and 66 rushing. Donovan Edwards was explosive for Michigan, scoring two touchdowns and amassing 87 yards on just two carries. Washington's offense, after their first drive with 41 passing and 26 rushing yards, struggled as Heisman runner-up Michael Penix Jr. missed Biletnikoff runner-up Rome Odunze on a pivotal fourth-down play. Michigan's defense, led by 340-pound Kenneth Grant, was formidable, and they seemed to have decoded Washington's signals. Michigan's offense, averaging 16.4 yards per carry (YPC), had accumulated 180 rushing yards by the second quarter. After gaining 235 yards, Michigan faced their first third down and settled for a 31-yard field goal by James Turner, making the score 17-3 in favor of Michigan.
Eleven Michigan offensive snaps since Donovan Edwards got the ball. Also 11 Michigan offensive snaps since the Wolverines have scored a touchdown.

Kenneth Grant, ladies and gentlemen.
Kenneth Grant. Game wrecker.
Kenneth Grant is an extremely kind young man. Unless he's on the football field. Then, he's an animal.
Kenneth Grant https://t.co/i4XZqOlP4P
Oh my god Kenneth Grant
Michigan just did what Texas could not for a whole game: Sacked Michael Penix.
Big Sack for Michigan
Kenneth Grant, everybody.
Go blue. https://t.co/hEOFSr5d0X
Thought Odunze was running the corner. https://t.co/DSCvpfeO7f
I for one am appreciative that Michigan's passing attack is now trying to keep this game competitive and interesting.
Washington rolls the dice early going for it on fourth-and-7. 🎲 Michael Penix Jr. overthrows Rome Odunze and the Huskies turn the ball over on downs. https://t.co/LbQauVhh2f
The Washington Huskies at the CFB National Championship https://t.co/I0xi2k7rye
This is where the cheating comes in handy: Michigan stealing Washington's playbook caused Penix to overthrow a wide open Rome Odunze. Only explanation.
Michigan isn’t taking enough advantage of this slow start by the Husky offense. They should be up by more.
Penix missed a wide open Rome Odunze... https://t.co/MrIKFOUzHF
Following the Sark game plan. https://t.co/7H4yi2rrTW
Once again the Michigan defense is feasting on an impotent B1G offense.
Huge fourth-down miss. Rome Odunze got wide open and Penix throws to his outside shoulder. https://t.co/PZtJovRsLz
Washington blew a perfect opportunity for a TD. Unforced error. Michigan’s defense did nothing to stop it.
Washington turnover on downs! 😳 Michael Penix Jr. and Rome Odunze can't connect on the deep pass. #NationalChampionship https://t.co/oo3bBV8xgQ
Penix has missed on the two most important throws of the game so far. 4th and 7 wide open Odunze 3rd and goal, touch high/outside Can’t beat Michigan with unforced errors.
Brutal miss by Penix on 4th down. Wonder if Odunze was supposed to break away from the safety but was so wide open he just went straight up field. Would have been a TD. Now Michigan takes over at midfield.
Penix was so accurate last game. -End zone throw wasn’t close. -4th down throw not pretty. UW didn’t have a lot of room for error. Harbaugh going for the throat here.
Michael Penix Jr. misses an open Rome Odunze on 4th down 😬 https://t.co/pQjlTSZyws
One more Michigan score and this game is over.
WOW PENIX JUST OVERTHREW IT FOR ROME ODUNZE… MICHIGAN TAKES OVER https://t.co/Y4xkhXzYcu
Oh my word. Michael Penix had Rome Odunze on a wide-open TD -- it was fourth-and-7, Michigan had a busted coverage and the Heisman runner-up and Biletnikoff runner-up just couldn't connect. A game-changing play as U-M takes over near midfield.
That was probably a touchdown to Rome Odunze, and Michael Penix Jr. missed him. That kind of night.
Rome Odunze misread what would have been a wide open likely touchdown on fourth down. That might be the game.
Michael Penix had Rome Odunze wide open and just missed him. Turnover on downs for UW, giving Michigan the ball back.
If Michael Penix can't hit Rome Odunze when he is wide open, the night is over.
A series of false starts, a pass short of the sticks and a 4th down pass too high for Rome Odunze gives the ball back to Michigan near midfield.
Michigan's defense doing a great job of muddying MOFC and MOFO pre- to post-snap, and rolling deep to the boundary to take away those vertical shots.
Washington fails to convert, Michigan ball! Big stop for Wolverines. Wow he was open!

Hey Michigan. No reason to throw the ball on 3rd and 4 vs Washington. Two runs for 4 yards … easy work in this game.
Really don't understand the 3rd-and-4 play call. Michigan's averaging 16.4 YPC. Instead it goes to the air and it's incomplete. Nonetheless, Michigan tacks on a field goal and that's an enormous stop by the Washington defense. 2Q 13:28 | No. 1 Michigan 17, No. 2 Washington 3
180 rushing yards for @umichfootball... the 2nd quarter just started 🥶 https://t.co/yKXCuRGeL9
Washington had given up just two runs of 40 yards or more coming into the game. Three so far, but the Huskies get a big stop and Michigan kicks a FG.
There is a 100% chance Michigan picks up that first down with two straight runs.
Michigan throws on third-and-4, for some reason, and Jabbar Muhammad breaks it up. Wolverines settle for a FG, which feels like a win for UW. Michigan up 17-3 with 13:28 left in the first half.
Critical PBU by Jabbar Muhammad and the Huskies hold. Michigan adds a 31-yard field goal and leads 17-3.
13:32 in the second quarter and Michigan faced their first third down attempt. 235 yards before JJ McCarthy's pass fell short and they kick a 31 yard FG to make it 17-3.
Michigan kicks a FG; 17-3; 13:28 2Q #GoBlue #NationalChampionship

That was a pretty efficient first quarter for Donovan Edwards. 🤯 https://t.co/Ha1IUJbh9K
Donovan Edwards has touched the ball twice for @umichfootball tonight He has 2 TD and 87 yards 🔥 https://t.co/xFSEQ1VH1N

This will be Michigan's first third down of the game.
WHAT A START FOR DONOVAN EDWARDS 😱 #NationalChampionship https://t.co/cw8pB21Wfb
Donovan Edwards has 87 yards. Blake Corum has 73. They combined for 6 carries in the 1st quarter.
Michigan had 229 first-quarter yards vs. Washington. It had 213 in its game vs. Iowa.
END OF THE FIRST QUARTER: Michigan: 229 total yards Washington: 74 total yards
