Duke's baseball team secured a significant 8-1 victory over N.C. State, advancing to the ACC tournament semifinals against Miami. Andrew Healy was instrumental, pitching five shutout innings, allowing just one hit, and striking out four. Duke's offense was powered by four home runs. Jonathan Santucci's return is also notable. In another ACC tournament game, Wake Forest defeated UNC 9-5 in a dramatic 12-inning match. Chase Burns delivered a stellar performance with 15 strikeouts over six innings, but the bullpen faltered, allowing UNC to tie the game. Burns has an ERA of 0.34 in May and 57 strikeouts. Nick Kurtz was the hero, hitting a game-tying double in the ninth and a go-ahead two-run homer in the 12th. Wake Forest will face FSU in the semifinals.
Wake Forest beats UNC 9-5 in 12 innings. Chase Burns pitched brilliant and it was yesterday. Wake's bullpen let him down. Nick Kurtz doubled in the tying run with WF down to its last strike, and hit the game-winning HR in his next at-bat. WF plays FSU tomorrow at 1 p.m.
Wake Forest Baseball wins an absurd 12-inning game over UNC 9-5 and will advance to the ACC Championship semifinals against FSU right back here at Truist Field in. . .a little more than 12 hours.
Big Mike onto the bump. 3 outs left, Deacs up 9-5.
Wake Forest takes a 7-5 lead in the top of the 12th on a Nick Kurtz homer.
Nick Kurtz go-ahead 2-run HR in the 12th inning is the 54th of the 2024 ACC Baseball Championship, tying the most in event history.
NICK KURTZ, ladies and gentlemen!!! Two run BOMB to left-center and the Deacs grab a 7-5 lead.
Nick Kurtz launches an opposite field HR on the first pitch. Wake Forest leads 6-4 (Marek Houston had led off with a single).
NICK. KURTZ. CLUTCHHHHHHHHH. WE GOT A 5-5 BALLGAME HERE IN THE 9TH @WakeBaseball | ACCN | 🏆 https://t.co/s6B7f3pyKY
Full count, 2 outs, Nick Kurtz doubles into the right-center gap to score Cameron Nelson from 1st base. We're tied at 5-5.
Joe Ariola gets a strikeout to end the B8 and it'll be the 8-9-1 hitters that have to rally for the Deacons in the top of the ninth, trailing 5-4.
It is Cole Roland coming in to begin the bottom of the 8th, presumably going for a six-out save. Deacs lead 4-3.
It'll be Blake Morningstar on the mound for the Deacs in the bottom of the 7th. Chase Burns goes six innings with 15 strikeouts. He allowed six hits and two walks with no runs scored.
Cam Gill obliterates one. A two-run shot to left that gives Wake Forest a 4-0 lead.
9 hitter Gill goes yard and makes it 4-0 Wake. Those 2 insurance runs are huge with Burns coming out of the game.
Chase Burns in the month of May: 57 strikeouts 0.34 ERA #MTFY | #GoDeacs https://t.co/TOGKAOGcrW
Burns punctuates his night with a curveball that locked up Osuna for his 15th punch out. End of 6 ... Wake 2, UNC 0
Another strikeout to end the bottom of the 6th and an animated Chase Burns bounds off the mound with excitement. Deacs still lead 2-0.
Chase Burns will start the bottom-6th. He's at 87 pitches, with 13 strikeouts. As noted earlier, hasn't thrown more than 109 this season; was pulled at 94 mostly high-stress pitches last week. Believe he'll have this inning until/unless there's trouble or a matchup issue.
Chase Burns' 13th Strikeout thru 5. 😳 https://t.co/msYlYN6m63
Two men left on for UNC ... Burns 13 K ... 2-0 Wake through 5
Heels leave a couple stranded as Chase Burns picks up his 13th strikeout of the night. Deacs lead 2-0 throught five complete.
Chase is a f’in machine. Through 4 on 65ish. Striking out everyone.
Three more strikeouts for Burns, much to the chagrin of UNC coach Scott Forbes. Deacs lead 2-0 after four. Burns up to 11 Ks.
Chase Burns strikes out the side in the 3rd -- navigating Casey Cook's 1-out double -- and Wake's lead is 1-0 through 3. Burns has 8 strikeouts. Live record-tracking: He has 177 this year. WF's single-game record is 18 (Erik Hanson). Carlos Rodon is 4th in ACC history with 184.
Eight strikeouts through three for Burns. 1-0 Deacons
Three more strikeouts for Chase Burns, eight now in the game. Deacs lead 1-0 after three complete.
Chase works around a double and strikes out the side. Efficient inning.
Through 2, we're scoreless. Chase Burns just got a backward-K of Colby Wilkerson to strand the bases loaded. Needs to be an adjustment by Burns/Deacons on pitching farther down in the zone; high strikes haven't been called by Adam Dowdy tonight.
UNC leaves the bases loaded as Burns strikes out Wilkerson. That's five Ks for Chase Burns and there's no score through two complete.
Chase allows 2 singles and a walk but slams the door with a couple strikeouts. Nothing after 2, up around 40 pitches though.
Chase Burns *only* strikes out two in a 1-2-3 first inning. Got a glimpse of what the danger is tonight on Parks Harber's flyout to the warning track in CF to end it. Burns throws so damn hard that if you get a bat on it, the ball is going to travel -- especially in this park.
3 up, 3 down for Chase. 2 Ks. Scoreless after 1.
Deacs ran the pitch count up but couldn’t get one home. Burns time
None of the 3 teams that have qualified for the ACC baseball tournament semifinals were the top seed in their pool. Wake Forest can make it 4 for 4 tonite …
Duke wins 8-1 over N.C. State. Blue Devils punch their ticket to a Saturday semifinal matchup against Miami. Five shutout innings from Andrew Healy, four homers for each of the 8 runs. Interested to see what Chris Pollard says about Jonathan Santucci here in the presser.
6-SEED DUKE UPSETS 3-SEED NC STATE‼️ @DukeBASE is on to the semis. https://t.co/JZMzc2k0xV
Andrew Healy is finished, relieved by James Tallon. Healy's line: 5 innings, 1 hit, 0 walks, 4 strikeouts. In line for his first win since March 24 -- which was also against N.C. State, the only game of that series Duke won.
Andrew Healy's game-by-game before tonight's 5 scoreless innings. Quite the revelation Duke could have if Healy is stretched out and pitching like this, plus Jonathan Santucci's healthy return. https://t.co/FHBxk6E2MK
Andrew Healy lost his perfect game with Eli Serrano III's leadoff single in the 4th, but thanks to a double play on the next batter, has faced the minimum. I think that'll be all from him, with James Tallon warming up. Duke has to feel *great* about getting 4 from Healy.
9 up, 9 down for N.C. State against Andrew Healy. Man, if only Duke had this version of him all season. And, ya know, better late than never. Chase Krewson with the diving catch in left field to rob Noah Soles for the last out of the 3rd inning.
Duke starting Andrew Healy against N.C. State tonight, with Kyle Johnson at DH. Believe Johnson will be the second pitcher of the game; Healy hasn't gone more than 2 innings/35 pitches in 3 appearances this month. https://t.co/Ih6lZeyKbL
