The American Athletic Conference (AAC) has voted to accept Army as a football-only member starting in 2024. This comes as a surprise after AAC Commissioner Mike Aresco expressed doubts about Army joining just two weeks ago. Army will replace SMU, which is leaving the AAC to join the ACC. The addition of Army to the AAC means that there will only be two true FBS Independents remaining next season.
The AAC finally made it official tonight: Army is joining the league for football only next year, keeping it at 14 teams with SMU's departure to the ACC. Don't be surprised if #Tulane hosts Army (replacing SMU) and Navy (rotates back on schedule) in 2024.
Aresco said Army, which will be a conference member in football only, will have full voting rights in the conference, but declined to get into the finances. He would only say "everybody is happy with what we worked out."
Aresco confirming what @SBJ and others reported today in that the AAC won't schedule Army and Navy in the regular season. "Both Army and Navy wanted to keep it separate and we wanted to honor that."
Aresco said the league is going to work with Army re: scheduling given some of the games it has scheduled down the line. Also said the AAC has no desire to expand beyond 14 right now. "At this point, we're very happy with the membership we have."
