Thunder Hand MVP Gilgeous-Alexander Record $285 Million Supermax

The Oklahoma City Thunder have reached agreement with guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander on a four-year, $285 million supermax contract extension that will make him the highest-paid player in NBA history on an annual basis. The deal averages $71.25 million a season, surpassing the league’s entire $70 million salary cap from a decade ago.

The extension begins in the 2027-28 campaign at about $63.5 million and escalates to roughly $78.7 million in 2030-31, when the 26-year-old’s per-game pay will approach $1 million. Including the two years remaining on his current contract, Gilgeous-Alexander is now slated to earn more than $400 million through age 32.

Gilgeous-Alexander became eligible for the supermax after leading the Thunder to the 2025 NBA championship and capturing the regular-season MVP, Finals MVP and scoring titles—joining Michael Jordan, Shaquille O’Neal and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the only players to sweep those honors in one season.

While the guard’s payday secures Oklahoma City’s cornerstone through 2031, it tightens future roster options for general manager Sam Presti. Fellow 2022 draftees Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren are eligible for rookie-maximum extensions next summer, decisions that will test the Thunder’s ability to keep a young core intact under the league’s more punitive luxury-tax thresholds.
