Spencer Dinwiddie has signed with the Los Angeles Lakers for the second half of their season, with a contract valued at $1.5 million, specifically $1,554,654 for the 2023-24 season. The Lakers were able to offer Dinwiddie more than the minimum contract by utilizing the remaining portion of their non-taxpayer mid-level exception, which they did not spend on Gabe Vincent. Dinwiddie's decision to join the Lakers over the Dallas Mavericks suggests a preference for the Lakers' long-term financial and competitive position, influenced by Rob Pelinka being the first to call him during the negotiation process. Additionally, Dinwiddie's contract includes a unique incentive of a $1 bonus if the Lakers win the NBA Championship. Lakers coach Darvin Ham has expressed plans to utilize Dinwiddie in three-guard lineups alongside D'Angelo Russell and Austin Reaves, indicating a strategic approach to Dinwiddie's integration into the team.

Spencer Dinwiddie explains why he picked the Lakers over the Mavs: “Let’s say you’re a kid and you get your ass whupped by the bully. Dallas would have been like your mama, like, ‘It’s OK, baby.’ … Lakers are like your dad: ‘Nah, you better go out there and fight ‘til you win.’” https://t.co/Nxd7Vw9UmV
Which isn't to say Ham should regularly use D'Lo/Reaves/Dinwiddie as a closing trio. Again, context (and their success together) matters. But I'm not surprised it came up. I floated the idea for Tues' @LockedOnLakers pod (recorded earlier today) before Ham's comments. AK https://t.co/fdKQNlbAE1
I preface this by saying I am not advocating for three-guard lineups. Certainly not as a broad concept, no questions asked. That said, not all three-guard lineups are the same. D'Lo/Reaves/Dinwiddie are much bigger/longer than Russ/Pat Bev/Reaves. That context matters. A lot. AK
Dinwiddie mentioned that he’s extremely comfortable as a catch-and-shoot 3-point shooter, thriving when playing next to Luka Doncic, for example, and that he hasn’t been as efficient shooting off the dribble. Playing off LeBron/AD could help the catch-and-shoot opportunities.
Spencer Dinwiddie on initial points of emphasis with the Lakers: “Get downhill, provide rim pressure … just come in, be aggressive, set a tone.”

Max Christie is trending in a positive direction with his ankle, but isn’t expected to play before the All-Star break. Cam Reddish, meanwhile, is expected to be ready to return after the break. Vanderbilt and Vincent are a bit further away from potential returns.
Darvin Ham said that he envisions using Spencer Dinwiddie in three-guard lineups next to D’Angelo Russell and Austin Reaves. He said he could see the Lakers closing with those lineups at times.

So either the Mavs weren't offering the full amount they could, or Dinwiddie preferred the Lakers despite the $ difference. Looking long-term, the Lakers are in a "silghtly" better position to pay him next year than Dallas
Spencer Dinwiddie is signing for $1.5 million for the second half of the Lakers season, sources tell me and @ShamsCharania. The Lakers were able to offer Dinwiddie more than a minimum contract due to not using their full non-taxpayer mid-level exception on Gabe Vincent.
