Tropical Storm Chantal Nears Carolinas, 45-mph Winds Prompt Coastal Warnings

Tropical Storm Chantal, the third named cyclone of the 2025 Atlantic season, developed Saturday morning off the U.S. Southeast coast and quickly strengthened to sustained winds of 40–45 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center. At 11 a.m. EDT the center of the storm was located about 150 miles south-southeast of Charleston, South Carolina, drifting north at roughly 2 mph over waters of 28–29 °C that could allow modest additional intensification.

The NHC issued a Tropical Storm Warning from South Santee River, South Carolina, to Cape Fear, North Carolina, where tropical-storm-force winds are expected to reach shore Saturday evening. Forecasters project Chantal will edge onto the South Carolina coast early Sunday with top winds near 50 mph before turning northeast and weakening over eastern North Carolina and southeastern Virginia later Sunday.

Heavy rain is the primary hazard: 2–4 inches are likely across the coastal plain of both Carolinas, with isolated totals up to 6 inches that could trigger flash flooding. A storm surge of 1–3 feet, rough surf and dangerous rip currents are anticipated along beaches from northeastern Florida to the Mid-Atlantic. While the system poses no direct threat to the Gulf Coast of Florida, outer rainbands will keep showers frequent across the peninsula through Saturday.

Emergency management agencies in South Carolina and North Carolina are urging residents and holiday visitors to monitor official forecasts and heed local advisories as Chantal approaches.
