John Sterling, the iconic Yankees play-by-play announcer, is stepping down after a legendary career. Fans express nostalgia and admiration for his unique style and memorable calls. Sterling will be honored at Yankee Stadium and on WFAN.
That time John Sterling got emotional talking about how kind people are to him https://t.co/wiAINLo8GN
Nothing will ever top the Cody Ransom homer at Fenway in September 2008 when John was so convinced it was Jeter and didn’t realize it until Ransom had already rounded first. Aside from that, as a Bernie Williams stan, I was always partial to BERN BABY BERN! BERNIE GOES BOOM! https://t.co/EyKn4zgzQX
The voice of my childhood! So many great memories spent listening to his commentary and so many amazing Yankee moments that he managed to capture perfectly. What a career! https://t.co/gjBMGzjgMK
John Sterling is responsible for what, in my mind, is a top 5 baseball call of the last 50 years. His call of Rick Camp's 18th inning at-bat and eventual home run is simply masterclass. It's tremendous stuff. https://t.co/jn3bM8sfqV
As a Yankees fan kid without cable, John Sterling was my first favorite broadcaster. Even as a kid, I preferred Michael Kay on play-by-play so Sterling could freestyle. In a way that was entirely different from, say, Vin Scully. A legend leaves the booth. https://t.co/X9Dp2SRljj
As a Yankees fan living in California, listening to games has been the easiest thing to do before T-Mobile gave my family and me free MLBtv. My entire life he's been the broadcaster. Crazy times man https://t.co/ZIaF9syoEq
Which John Sterling home run call was your favorite?
Sterling was the absolute best. Would be brutally honest about the team. Didn’t take himself or anything too seriously. Had fun and would crack ya up on purpose or on accident once an inning. https://t.co/fXa4fuCr6D
I think John Sterling is the first generational institution announcer who I remember from before he took the job that gave him his greatest fame. First encountered him doing Braves games on TBS. It’s like knowing Ernie Harwell with the Brooklyn Dodgers or something.
On a personal note, I used to listen with my dad to John's sports radio talk show (one of the first) on WMCA in the 1970s. His 1st year as NYY play-by-play (1989) was my 1st on the NYY beat. And John LOVED newspapers and sports sections and championed both. #Godspeed https://t.co/56WXKXwRy1
John Sterling will be recognized in a pregame press conference on Saturday at Yankee Stadium. He will also visit the WFAN booth during the game.
Flipped to a Yankees game on the radio a couple days ago and Sterling wasn’t calling the game — sounded wrong. Had a visceral reaction to change the channel. This is a sad day. He’s fantastic. Love all his quirks and his voice is incredible. https://t.co/fSfkyFTVyg
