Major League Baseball has banned a 22-year-old spectator indefinitely from all 30 ballparks after he shouted a derogatory comment about the late mother of Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte during the club’s 4–1 win over the Chicago White Sox at Rate Field on 24 June, league and team officials said.

The taunt—“I sent your mom a text last night,” according to Marte—came in the seventh inning as the two-time All-Star prepared to bat. Marte, whose mother died in a 2017 car accident, broke down in tears on the field. Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo consoled the player and directed security to remove the heckler, who was immediately ejected.

The White Sox quickly barred the fan from their stadium, and MLB extended the sanction to cover every venue in the league, a source told ESPN. Before the following night’s game, the White Sox displayed the message “Baseball is family – the White Sox community supports Ketel Marte,” and chairman Jerry Reinsdorf sent written apologies to the infielder.

Marte, 31, declined extensive comment but said supporters cross a line when family members are targeted. He entered play on 25 June batting .316 with 14 home runs and received a standing ovation in his first home game after the incident. The league’s swift action underscores growing concern over abusive fan behavior at professional sporting events.
