Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy left Wednesday night’s game against the Chicago White Sox at Dodger Stadium with what the club described as “left knee pain.” The 34-year-old collapsed after tagging out Michael A. Taylor on a steal attempt in the sixth inning and was helped off the field without putting weight on the leg.

An initial on-field examination pointed to ligament damage. Sports injury analyst David J. Chao, a former NFL team physician known as ProFootballDoc, said video indicated a multi-week, high-grade sprain or tear of Muncy’s medial collateral ligament and expressed hope the anterior cruciate ligament was not affected. The Dodgers said Muncy will undergo imaging on Thursday; a timetable for his return has not been set.

The injury overshadowed a milestone night for Los Angeles ace Clayton Kershaw, who recorded his 3,000th career strikeout in the same inning. Muncy, hitting .247 with 18 home runs this season, is a key left-handed bat for a division-leading Dodgers team already managing injuries to several regulars.
