United Nations Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese warned that the situation in Gaza is “apocalyptic” as she presented her latest report, “From Economy of Occupation to Economy of Genocide,” to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on 3 July. The independent human-rights expert accused Israel of waging one of the “cruellest genocides in modern history” and said its campaign is sustained by an “economy of profiteering” involving dozens of multinational corporations.

Albanese urged UN member states to impose a full arms embargo on Israel, suspend trade and investment agreements, and ensure that corporate executives are held legally accountable for enabling violations of international law. Her report identifies more than 60 companies involved in weapons sales, surveillance technology, heavy machinery and financial services that allegedly facilitate Israel’s military operations and settlement expansion. She told reporters that more than 1,000 firms must sever ties with Israel or face scrutiny, asserting that some have seen profits jump 120 percent to about US$70 billion during the war.

Israel’s diplomatic mission in Geneva rejected the findings, calling the report “legally groundless, defamatory and a flagrant abuse of office.” While UN special rapporteurs operate independently of the organisation, their recommendations can influence national and corporate policy; Albanese drew parallels with the global divestment movement that pressured apartheid-era South Africa. The United States and several European governments have yet to comment publicly on the report’s call for sweeping economic measures.
