Pope Leo XIV used his first Sunday noon blessing from the loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica on 11 May to demand an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the release of hostages and unrestricted humanitarian access, while urging an “authentic, just and lasting peace” in Ukraine. Addressing thousands gathered on Mother’s Day, the American-born, naturalised Peruvian pontiff warned of a potential third world war and said he carried in his heart the suffering of civilians caught in the conflicts.
The following day the Pope held his first telephone conversation with a foreign leader, speaking with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Kyiv said the discussion was “warm and substantive” and covered the return of children deported to Russia, a European-backed 30-day ceasefire proposal and broader efforts to end the war. Zelensky thanked the Pope for his public support and invited him to make an apostolic visit to Ukraine.
Italian daily La Repubblica reported on 13 May that Leo XIV is already considering Ukraine among the first stops of his international travels, alongside Turkey, Portugal and Peru. The Vatican has not confirmed the itinerary, but a papal visit would mark a departure from the stance of his predecessor, Pope Francis, who never visited the country.
Separately, the Pope sent a letter to Rome’s Chief Rabbi Riccardo Di Segni pledging to “continue and strengthen” Catholic–Jewish dialogue, an overture that follows recent tension between the Holy See and Israel over the Gaza war. The message signals the new pontiff’s intention to pair vigorous diplomatic engagement with efforts to heal interfaith rifts.
In a letter addressed to Pope Leo XIV, the General Secretariat of the Synod says it “looks with confidence” to the directions he will provide to help the Church grow as “a home and family of God open to all.”

Pope Leo made it clear that he would carry forward the advocacy on behalf of Gaza that was a hallmark of the tenure of Pope Francis.
