An Israeli airstrike on Wednesday killed Dr. Marwan Al-Sultan, director of the Indonesian Hospital in northern Gaza, along with his wife and at least five of their children, Gaza’s Health Ministry and hospital officials said. The strike levelled their apartment in the Tel al-Hawa district of Gaza City; relatives later delivered the bodies to Al-Shifa Hospital.
The Israeli military confirmed carrying out an attack in the area, saying it had targeted "a key terrorist from the Hamas terrorist organisation" and had opened a review into reports of civilian casualties. No evidence was presented linking Al-Sultan, a cardiologist who had repeatedly appealed for international protection of Gaza’s medical facilities, to any armed group.
Al-Sultan’s death removes one of Gaza’s last senior heart specialists and underscores the collapse of the enclave’s healthcare system. The Indonesian Hospital, which he ran, was forced to shut in May after earlier shelling and a troop incursion damaged power generators and wards. According to Healthcare Workers Watch, he is the 70th medical worker killed in Israeli attacks over the past 50 days; UN data put overall medical staff deaths since October 2023 above 1,400.
Palestinian officials and Hamas condemned the strike as a war crime and evidence of what they say is a systematic campaign against healthcare personnel. Rights groups note that another hospital chief, Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya of Kamal Adwan Hospital, has been held in Israeli detention for more than six months.
The latest bombardment forms part of an intensified Israeli campaign that, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, killed 142 people in the past 24 hours, bringing the Palestinian death toll since 7 October 2023 to 57,012. The violence continues amid international efforts, backed by U.S. President Donald Trump, to secure a 60-day cease-fire that has yet to be accepted by either Israel or Hamas.
