Israel Approves Plan to Seize Entire Gaza Strip, Hold Territory Indefinitely

Israel’s security cabinet on 5 May approved an expanded war plan that envisions seizing the entire Gaza Strip and maintaining an open-ended Israeli military presence, according to multiple Israeli officials and local media reports. The decision would replace the current strategy of limited raids with full occupation of the enclave.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the forthcoming campaign as “intensive,” pledging that troops will stay “in every area they capture” until Hamas is defeated. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said Israel will “finally” occupy Gaza, while officials indicated that large numbers of reservists have been mobilised and that most of the population may be moved south or abroad during the assault.

If carried out, the operation would reverse Israel’s 2005 withdrawal from Gaza and is expected to provoke strong international opposition. Humanitarian agencies warn that expanded fighting, Israeli control over aid distribution and mass displacement could deepen shortages of food, medicine and shelter in the enclave, where famine already looms.

Hamas responded that it sees “no point” in further cease-fire talks, accusing Israel of waging a “hunger war” and saying the cabinet’s vote sacrifices Israeli hostages still held in Gaza. The group urged the international community to halt the planned offensive.
