Islamic State insurgents have taken control of the village of Mucojo in the Macomia district of Cabo Delgado province, Mozambique since Sunday. This development follows the withdrawal of the Mozambican Armed Defence Forces (FADM) from the area. Mucojo is the first significant settlement to fall into the hands of the insurgents since the Rwandan Security Forces (RSF) expelled them from Mocímboa da Praia and Mbau in August 2021. The Mozambican Defence Minister has commented on the situation, suggesting that there are 'hidden ambitions' behind the acts of terrorism in the region.
