The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Shin Bet security agency have announced the elimination of two senior Hamas operatives in recent airstrikes in the Gaza Strip. Approximately two weeks ago, the IDF and Shin Bet targeted and killed Hamza Wael Muhammad Asafah, the head of a Nukhba terrorist cell in Hamas' Deir al-Balah battalion. Asafah had infiltrated Israeli territory during the October 7, 2023 attacks and participated in hostage release ceremonies for Israeli citizens Eli Sharabi, Ohad Ben Ami, and Or Levy. In a separate operation, the IDF and Shin Bet confirmed the death of Mahmud Ibrahim Hasan Abu Hisirah, a senior Hamas operative and personal aide to Izz al-Din Haddad, commander of Hamas' Gaza Brigade. Abu Hisirah was a longtime member of Hamas' elite Nukhba unit and was involved in the 2014 Nahal Oz infiltration during Operation Protective Edge, where five IDF soldiers were killed. He played a key role in Hamas's preparations for the October 7 attacks.
