Advanced by the House Rules Committee through H.Res.377 in a party-line vote, the bill requires all federal laws, maps, regulations, and official documents to refer to the body of water as the Gulf of America. The measure is supported by House Republican leaders, who argue the change reflects America's strategic and economic influence over the region, which borders Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. Codifying the executive order into law would prevent future administrations from reversing the name change.
Democratic lawmakers have opposed the bill, attempting to add amendments such as restrictions on oil and gas drilling, but none were adopted. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) also criticized the proposal. The Associated Press has continued to use the term 'Gulf of Mexico,' leading to a legal dispute, while Google Maps in the U.S. now displays the body of water as the 'Gulf of America.'
If enacted, the bill would make the name change permanent and mandate updates to federal documents and maps within 180 days. The Gulf of Mexico, now referred to as the Gulf of America on some U.S. digital platforms, remains internationally recognized by its original name.
