U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem alleged on 10 June that Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum had encouraged violent demonstrations erupted in Los Angeles against recent immigration raids. Noem said from the Oval Office that Sheinbaum’s remarks had fueled unrest, drawing immediate diplomatic attention.
Sheinbaum responded the same day, calling the accusation “completely false” and insisting that Mexico rejects violence. She acknowledged the protests stem from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations and confirmed that 61 Mexican nationals have been detained. The president urged Mexican-Americans to demonstrate peacefully and warned against possible provocations, such as the burning of patrol cars bearing Mexico’s flag.
On 11 June, Sheinbaum hosted U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau for a two-hour meeting in Mexico City. She said she used the encounter to voice Mexico’s opposition to the raids, arguing they harm migrant families and could undermine the U.S. economy. Landau departed without public comment, and both sides described the talks as part of routine bilateral engagement.
Sheinbaum also dismissed a Reuters report claiming Washington had asked Mexico to investigate or extradite politicians allegedly tied to organized crime. “No such request was made,” she told reporters, a statement later echoed by Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch.
Looking ahead, Sheinbaum said it is “very probable” she will meet President Donald Trump during the G7 summit in Canada on 16–17 June. Migration, trade and the recently implemented 145 percent tariff on Chinese goods are expected to dominate her agenda.
