Pumas Sign Welsh Midfielder Aaron Ramsey on One-Year Deal

Mexican club Pumas UNAM has completed the signing of 34-year-old Wales captain Aaron Ramsey on a one-year contract that includes an option for a further season, the team announced on 3 July. The free-transfer move follows the expiry of Ramsey’s deal with Cardiff City, which was relegated to England’s third tier at the end of the last campaign.

Ramsey flew into Mexico City before dawn on 1 July after passing a medical examination in the United Kingdom. His pending arrival was inadvertently revealed a day earlier when Mexican Ambassador to the U.K. Josefa González Blanco posted a welcome message. The Athletic reported that the midfielder rejected higher-paying offers from clubs in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

During his presentation, Ramsey said he was “excited to join a historic club” and credited head coach Efraín Juárez—himself a former player in Britain—for convincing him to try Liga MX. Pumas indicated the veteran playmaker is in line to inherit the No. 10 shirt and could debut in the Apertura 2025 opener against Santos Laguna on 12 July, subject to fitness and registration.

Ramsey becomes one of the most accomplished European footballers to join Mexico’s top flight. His résumé includes three FA Cups and three Community Shields with Arsenal, a Serie A title with Juventus and a Scottish Cup with Rangers. Pumas, whose last league championship came in 2011, are counting on his experience to revive the club’s domestic and Leagues Cup ambitions.
