U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) released its Southwest border statistics for May, revealing significant changes in border activity. Apprehensions dropped slightly compared to April, while inadmissible alien encounters at border ports reached nearly 53,000, marking a new record and a 565% increase compared to May 2021. In total, there were 170,723 encounters with illegal immigrants at the Southern Border in May, representing a 185% increase compared to any May under the Trump administration. Since January 20, 2021, there have been over 9.6 million illegal alien encounters nationwide, surpassing the population of New York City. For the past 11 months, CBP has recorded over 240,000 encounters each month nationwide, totaling more than 3.1 million, which matches the number of encounters recorded from FY17-20 combined.
