Assaults on transit workers have surged, with a nearly threefold increase in major assaults resulting in death or requiring medical transport nationally between 2008 and 2022, rising from 168 to 492. The Urban Institute reported a tripling of violent assaults on transit workers, particularly post-pandemic. In addition, there has been a surge in copper wire theft in various cities, prompting the creation of police task forces to crack down on the thefts. Robberies and thefts in Boston also spiked dramatically last year, raising concerns about thieves increasingly targeting stores and commercial businesses. Furthermore, there have been reports of staff feeling encouraged to turn a blind eye to bullying in hospitals run by the Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and over 1,700 physical assaults recorded on hospital staff in Kent and Sussex in a single year.
