Meta Platforms Inc. has successfully obtained an emergency arbitration ruling to temporarily halt the promotion and further distribution of 'Careless People: A Cautionary Tale of Power, Greed, and Lost Idealism,' a memoir written by former employee Sarah Wynn-Williams. The book, which was released this week, contains allegations of misconduct, including claims of sexual harassment and inappropriate behavior by senior executives at Meta during her seven-year tenure from 2011 to 2017. The arbitration decision, issued by Nicholas Gowen of the American Arbitration Association, mandates that Wynn-Williams cease all promotion of the book and refrain from making any further disparaging comments about Meta or its employees. Additionally, she is required to retract any previous disparaging remarks to the extent she can control them. The ruling does not extend to the book's publisher, Flatiron Books, or its parent company, Macmillan, allowing them to continue selling the memoir. In her book, Wynn-Williams alleges that she was subjected to sexual harassment by her former boss, Joel Kaplan, who is now Meta's chief global affairs officer. She also claims that former COO Sheryl Sandberg spent USD 13,000 on lingerie and crossed professional boundaries, and that CEO Mark Zuckerberg worked closely with the Chinese government to gain market access. Meta has denied these allegations, describing them as 'false and defamatory,' and stated that Wynn-Williams was fired for poor performance and toxic behavior. The emergency arbitration was sought by Meta after Wynn-Williams appeared on a podcast discussing the memoir and her allegations that the company was attempting to suppress the book. Meta argued that Wynn-Williams violated a non-disparagement clause in her severance agreement from 2017. The company emphasized that Wynn-Williams did not follow standard fact-checking processes before publishing her book. Wynn-Williams has also filed a complaint with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The book has reached number 6 on Amazon's bestseller list, and the Irish government reportedly provided Meta with a 'special phone' for direct communication in case of issues. An investigation at Meta cleared Joel Kaplan of the harassment allegations.
