The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has filed a chargesheet against Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald money laundering case. This marks the first time a chargesheet has been filed against them. The chargesheet was submitted to a special court in Delhi, which has scheduled the next hearing for April 25 to consider cognizance of the complaint. The case stems from allegations of money laundering related to the acquisition of properties belonging to Associated Journals Limited (AJL), the publisher of the National Herald newspaper, by Young Indian Private Limited. Sonia and Rahul Gandhi are majority shareholders of Young Indian, each holding 38% of the shares. The ED's investigation, which began in 2021 following a complaint by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy, alleges that Young Indian acquired AJL's properties worth over Rs 2,000 crore for just Rs 50 lakh. The agency further claims that these properties were used to generate additional proceeds of crime amounting to Rs 85 crore through bogus donations of Rs 18 crore, bogus advance rent of Rs 38 crore, and bogus s of Rs 29 crore. The ED has also taken steps to seize immovable assets worth Rs 661 crore in Delhi, Mumbai, and Lucknow. The chargesheet also names Congress leaders Sam Pitroda and Suman Dubey as accused. The Congress party has denounced the chargesheet as an act of political vendetta and intimidation by the government. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh stated that the seizure of National Herald's assets is a state-sponsored crime masquerading as the rule of law.
