Colombian President Gustavo Petro has called for the state-owned oil company Ecopetrol to sell its fracking operations in the United States. The announcement was made during a televised cabinet meeting, where Petro reiterated his administration's opposition to fracking, describing it as harmful to nature and humanity. The operations in question are located in the Permian Basin, a major oil-producing region in Texas and New Mexico. Ecopetrol recently extended its agreement with Occidental Petroleum to continue operations in the area, which includes plans to drill 91 wells, including 34 new wells, with an investment of $880 million. The contract extension is set to run until 2027. Petro stated that the proceeds from the sale should be redirected to clean energy projects in Colombia, aligning with his government’s goal of transitioning away from fossil fuels. The final decision on the sale rests with Ecopetrol's board of directors.
