In response to a surge in car thefts, particularly targeting Hyundai vehicles, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) has partnered with Hyundai to offer a free anti-theft software upgrade. The event, taking place at the LVMPD headquarters at 400 S. Martin Luther King Blvd, does not require an appointment and is open from 8 am to 6 pm throughout the weekend. The initiative aims to combat a viral TikTok trend that has led to an increase in Hyundai vehicle thefts. On the first day, a record-breaking 708 vehicles received the security upgrades, surpassing the previous record of 568 set in El Paso. By the second day, the total number of upgraded vehicles reached 1,000, with 625 vehicles updated as of 5 pm on the first day. Hyundai has also provided free steering wheel locks to drivers who received the software update. The event has seen significant turnout, with hundreds of people lining up for the upgrades, and over 21,000 eligible vehicles still in need of the update. Organizers have ensured low wait times for the service, which is aimed at potentially thousands of cars.
