South Korea's Constitutional Court Dismisses Impeachment of Auditor General and Prosecutors

South Korea's Constitutional Court has unanimously dismissed the impeachment motions against Auditor General Choi Jae-hae and three prosecutors, allowing them to resume their duties immediately. On March 13, 2025, the court ruled that the impeachments of Choi and prosecutors Lee Chang-soo, Jo Sang-won, and Choi Jae-hoon were without merit. The National Assembly had accused Choi of conducting inadequate audits related to the relocation of the presidential office and of engaging in targeted audits against the former head of the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission. The prosecutors were accused of insufficient investigation into allegations involving First Lady Kim Keon-hee. The court's decisions were unanimous, with all eight justices agreeing to reject the impeachment motions. Choi expressed gratitude to the court and stated that he would focus on strengthening discipline among public officials. The rulings come amid heightened tensions as the nation awaits the court's verdict on the impeachment trial of President Yoon Suk-yeol, which has yet to be scheduled.
