Padres Activate Yu Darvish for Season Debut vs. Diamondbacks

The San Diego Padres will activate veteran right-hander Yu Darvish from the 60-day injured list for Monday’s home game against the Arizona Diamondbacks, manager Mike Shildt said. The appearance at Petco Park will be the 38-year-old’s first of the 2025 season after he spent more than three months rehabbing right-elbow inflammation first detected during spring training.

Darvish threw four innings and 64 pitches in a simulated game last week and reported no setbacks after a follow-up bullpen session. Shildt plans to limit the five-time All-Star to roughly 70–75 pitches, or four to five innings. A victory would break Darvish’s tie with Hiroki Kuroda for the most wins by a Japanese pitcher in major-league and Nippon Professional Baseball combined, giving him 204 career victories.

Darvish joins a rotation that has been thinned by injuries to Michael King, Joe Musgrove and rookie Ryan Bergert. Despite the absences, San Diego sits second in the National League West and four games ahead of the Diamondbacks. Monday’s start is the first in the third season of Darvish’s six-year, $108 million contract; he finished 2024 with a 3.31 ERA over 81⅔ innings and a 1.98 mark in the postseason.
