Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako of Japan concluded a seven-day official visit to the United Kingdom with a trip to Oxford University, where they both studied in the 1980s. On June 28, they were welcomed by hundreds of people and toured Balliol College, where Empress Masako had studied. The Emperor and Empress also visited Merton College, where Emperor Naruhito had been a student, and planted cherry trees in the college grounds. Empress Masako received an honorary degree at Convocation House from the Chancellor of Oxford University, Lord Patten. The imperial couple expressed their delight at the deepening friendship and goodwill between Japan and the UK before departing for Japan from RAF Brize Norton on Friday night.
