Forza Italia Pushes Ius Scholae as League Demands Hijab Ban in Schools

Deputy Premier Antonio Tajani said Forza Italia is ready to work with opposition parties on its Ius Scholae bill, which would let foreign-born pupils apply for Italian citizenship after completing ten years of schooling with satisfactory grades. The overture was welcomed by the centre-left Democratic Party and backed by Five Star Movement leader Giuseppe Conte, who urged Parliament to approve the measure swiftly.

The League, another member of the governing coalition, rejected the proposal as “unacceptable and wrong.” At a news conference in the lower house, League officials Silvia Sardone and Rossano Sasso instead unveiled a resolution aimed at “stopping the Islamisation of schools,” including a ban on Islamic headscarves for girls and a requirement for parental authorisation for lessons about Islam.

The opposing stances have reopened long-running tensions inside the right-wing alliance that rules with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy. No date has been set for a parliamentary vote, but the dispute places migration, integration and religious freedom back at the centre of Italy’s summer political agenda.
