The indictment division specializing in terrorism cases at the Tunis Court of Appeal has decided to refer 12 defendants, including leaders of the Ennahdha movement, to trial on terrorism-related charges, according to court spokesperson Habib Torkhani. Rached Ghannouchi, the head of Tunisia's largest opposition party Ennahda and a prominent critic of President Kais Saied, has been in prison since April 2023. Ghannouchi has repeatedly refused to appear in court, citing unfair trials and threats to judges. A Tunisian appeals court upheld an initial ruling sentencing Ghannouchi to three years in prison on charges of receiving foreign financing to support Ennahda's political campaigns in 2019.
