The defense deal between Somalia and Turkey has significantly impacted a previously established agreement between Somalia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which has not been approved by the Somali parliament despite being signed last year. This development led to the UAE cutting some of its funding to Somalia. The shift in Somalia's defense alliances reflects its changing political strategies, particularly in light of Turkey's increasing involvement in the country under President Erdogan's leadership. Turkey's commitment to Somalia includes over $1 billion in humanitarian aid, the establishment of Somalia's largest overseas embassy, and a military base in Mogadishu to train one-third of the Somali military. Additionally, following the defense agreement, Turkey and Somalia have also signed an energy accord, further strengthening their ties amid tensions in Somaliland.
