In the wake of the Hamas attacks on October 7, the humanitarian situation in Gaza has severely impacted maternal health, with Palestinian women facing dire conditions during childbirth, including extortionate fees to escape Gaza. Only 12 hospitals remain partly operational, of which just two offer maternity services, struggling to accommodate the approximately 180 women giving birth daily. These women are enduring childbirth in deplorable conditions, lacking essential resources such as anesthetic, clean water, and food for newborns. The crisis has led to reports of small and sickly newborns, stillbirths, and women being forced to undergo C-sections without adequate anesthesia. Despite these challenges, UNRWA continues to provide medical care in health centers and shelters, including for post-natal and high-risk pregnancies.
