Israel marked 600 days since the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack with nationwide rallies and protests demanding the release of hostages still held in Gaza and an end to the ongoing war. Thousands gathered in Tel Aviv's Hostages Square and other locations, including the headquarters of the ruling Likud party, where families of hostages and supporters called for a ceasefire and a deal to secure the hostages' release. A 600-minute sit-in was held at the Likud headquarters, and regular rallies have continued in Hostages Square.
According to Israeli authorities and reports, 58 hostages remain in Gaza, including four Americans—Omer Neutra, Itay Chen, Gadi Haggai, and Judith Weinstein. Of the 58, up to 23 are believed to be alive, while at least 34 are presumed dead, with Hamas reportedly ransoming the bodies of some victims. The majority of remaining hostages are reported to be Israeli soldiers. In Nir Oz, 14 residents are still held in Gaza.
Protests intensified around the 600-day mark, with demonstrators storming the Likud party headquarters in Tel Aviv. Israeli police arrested more than 60 protesters, declared the protest illegal, and reported two police officers injured. Protesters wore Netanyahu masks, blocked traffic, and set fires. Demonstrations also took place in Jerusalem and other cities, with participants demanding a ceasefire and early elections.
Negotiations for a potential hostage deal, referred to as the 'Witkoff outline', have reportedly resumed, with discussions of a phased release in exchange for a temporary ceasefire, though no agreement has been reached. The government, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, faces criticism from hostage families and the public over the lack of progress in securing the hostages' return and the ongoing military campaign in Gaza.
Events marking the anniversary included the Jerusalem Prayer Breakfast at the Knesset, sponsored by MK Matan Kahana, with remarks from MK Moshe Turpaz, MK Tatiana Mazarsky, and MK Simon Davidson. Former Slovak Prime Minister Eduard Heger delivered a public apology. Hostage families, including Karina Engel-Bart, spoke of the ongoing pain and called for immediate action to free the remaining hostages.
