Kurdistan Region security officials said they intercepted and destroyed an explosive-laden drone on Thursday evening near Erbil International Airport, which hosts troops from the US-led coalition. The counter-terrorism service reported no injuries or material damage, and airport operations continued with only one flight briefly delayed.
In a separate incident the same night, local media and security sources said at least one drone exploded near Kirkuk International Airport, about 90 kilometres south-west of Erbil. Preliminary accounts indicated a blast outside the terminal perimeter, with no immediate reports of casualties.
Analysts monitoring the attacks said the unmanned aircraft involved were likely one-way strike drones of Iranian design, such as the Shahed-101 or Shahed-107. No group has claimed responsibility, and Iraqi and Kurdish authorities have opened investigations amid a continuing uptick in drone strikes on facilities housing international forces.
