On May 4, 2025, during the first round of Romania's presidential elections, the pro-Russian hacker group NoName057(16) conducted a series of distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) cyberattacks targeting Romanian government websites and candidates' campaign sites.
Targets included the websites of the Romanian Constitutional Court, the main government portal (gov.ro), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Justice, and the campaign site of candidate Crin Antonescu. The attacks were publicly claimed by NoName057(16) in support of nationalist candidate George Simion, who is described by the group as a potential ally of Vladimir Putin. The group has recently focused on sabotaging elections across Europe, and also attacked sites in the Netherlands.
Romanian authorities confirmed the attacks but reported that the affected websites, including senat.ro, just.ro, and ccr.ro, were restored shortly after the incidents. The Ministry of Internal Affairs stated that its official site was not compromised, attributing any downtime to maintenance and high traffic.
The cyberattacks coincided with exit polls showing George Simion winning the first round, with Crin Antonescu and Nicușor Dan vying for the runoff. Separately, Romania was recently taken off the US visa-free travel list.
In Poland, the Minister of Digital Affairs, Krzysztof Gawkowski, accused Russia of an unprecedented attempt to interfere in Poland's upcoming presidential election, citing a doubling of cyberattacks on critical infrastructure compared to the previous year. Polish authorities reported ongoing hybrid attacks, including disinformation campaigns and sabotage attempts targeting vital services.
Cloudflare, a major internet services provider, reported mitigating a record number of DDoS attacks in the first quarter of 2025, with 20.5 million attacks already addressed, highlighting the growing scale of cyber threats facing online entities and governments.
