The World Day Against Child Labour is being observed today, highlighting the global issue of child labor and the urgent need for action. The International Labour Organization (ILO) launched this day in 2002 to focus attention on the extent of child labor and the efforts needed to eliminate it. According to the UN, about 160 million children worldwide are victims of child labor, which deprives them of education and threatens their well-being and future. In Afghanistan, 19% of children are engaged in child labor. Nobel Peace Prize laureate Kailash Satyarthi has urged rich countries to strengthen social protection for marginalized children. Various organizations, including the Office of the Assistant Labour Commissioner in India, are taking initiatives to create awareness and combat child labor. The pandemic has exacerbated the issue, leading to an increase in child labor globally. The Child Labour (Prohibition & Regulation) Act of 1986 in India, enacted under Rajiv Gandhi, aimed at addressing this issue. Currently, about 218 million children aged between 5 and 17 around the world are engaged in child labor.
