Southern and southeastern Asia are currently experiencing severe heatwaves, with record-breaking temperatures reported across various regions. In West Bengal, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted continued heatwave conditions until at least April 30, attributing the high temperatures to dry westerly winds. Notably, Kalaikunda in West Bengal recorded a staggering 47.2 degrees Celsius, and Kolkata hit a 50-year high of 43°C. Similarly, Bengaluru reported its highest April average maximum temperature in 55 years, with no expected rainfall until May 5. Thailand is also facing extreme temperatures, with some areas reaching record highs. This regional climate anomaly coincides with record sea surface temperatures in the North Indian Ocean, and last April, eastern states like Bihar and Odisha were significantly affected.
