The National Commission for Women (NCW) has initiated a suo moto investigation into reports of women getting pregnant while incarcerated in West Bengal jails, following a media post highlighting the issue. An inquiry committee has been formed to look into the matter, which was brought to light by an English daily reporting that 196 births occurred in jails lacking medical infrastructure. Additionally, it was disclosed in court that 62 babies were born in these jails over the last four years.
