Modi Lands in Brazil for Expanded BRICS Summit, State Visit

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived at Rio de Janeiro’s Galeão International Airport on Saturday evening, beginning a four-day visit to Brazil at the invitation of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Modi will attend the 17th BRICS Summit on 6–7 July before travelling to Brasília for a state visit.

The meeting will be the first BRICS gathering since the bloc admitted Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, expanding its membership to 10 nations alongside Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. In a departure statement, Modi said India, a founding member, remains committed to working with emerging economies for a “more balanced multipolar world order.”

Modi’s stop in Brazil is the fourth leg of a five-nation tour that has already taken him to Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago and Argentina. The trip marks the first bilateral visit by an Indian prime minister to Brazil in nearly 60 years and is expected to focus on trade, energy and defence cooperation, as well as meetings with several world leaders on the summit’s sidelines.
