The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 has resumed after a week-long suspension caused by military tensions between India and Pakistan. The tournament, which was paused following a security incident during the Delhi Capitals versus Punjab Kings match, will now be completed in a compressed schedule, with the final pushed to June 3.
Several overseas players will not return for the remainder of the tournament due to safety concerns, international commitments, or personal reasons. Australia’s Mitchell Starc and Jake Fraser-McGurk, both from Delhi Capitals, will miss the rest of the season. England’s Jos Buttler will play for Gujarat Titans until the end of the league stage but will miss the playoffs, with Sri Lanka’s Kusal Mendis signed as his replacement. Other absentees include Jofra Archer, Sam Curran, Jamie Overton, Moeen Ali, and Rovman Powell. RCB's Romario Shepherd, Phil Salt, and Jacob Bethell are available for two more matches.
Delhi Capitals are making strategic changes as they push for a playoff spot, with KL Rahul set to open the batting for the remaining matches. Rahul has scored 381 runs in 10 games at an average of 47.63 this season, mostly batting in the middle order. Faf du Plessis has rejoined DC, while Jake Fraser-McGurk will not return. The team will also be without leading wicket-taker Mitchell Starc for the rest of the tournament, with Mustafizur Rahman joining as his replacement on May 18. Tristan Stubbs remains available for DC.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru face uncertainty over the availability of Josh Hazlewood, who is recovering from a shoulder injury but may return for the final stages. Rajat Patidar has recovered from a finger injury and is expected to be available for upcoming matches.
Chennai Super Kings’ MS Dhoni has not indicated any plans to retire after IPL 2025, and the team management considers him crucial for the transition period. Dhoni is expected to continue as a player next season, while Ruturaj Gaikwad will resume captaincy upon his return from injury.
The absence of foreign players has prompted team reshuffles and the signing of short-term replacements. Punjab Kings have signed Kyle Jamieson, and Lucknow Super Giants have brought in Will O'Rourke. South African players, including Kagiso Rabada, must leave the tournament by May 26 due to national team commitments.
Former Australia pacer Mitchell Johnson has advised foreign players to prioritize safety and consider skipping the remainder of the IPL, citing the recent security situation and the importance of preparation for the World Test Championship final.
Delhi Capitals look to revive their playoff hopes in their final home game of the season. Gujarat Titans will also look to have their plans in place as the IPL returns to Delhi.
