India is set to implement new criminal laws from July 1, which include significant changes to the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), and Evidence Act. These changes, introduced after more than 50 meetings chaired by Home Minister Amit Shah, aim to decolonize the legal system. Key amendments include the replacement of the sedition law with a section on treason, the introduction of a section on organized crime, and provisions for recording rape victims' statements by female officers. The new laws also stipulate that court judgments must be delivered within 45 days of the trial's end. Additionally, the laws allow FIRs to be registered from anywhere at any time. The three new laws are named Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita-2023, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita-2023, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam-2023. However, the Bar Council of West Bengal has criticized the new laws as 'anti-people and draconian' and plans to observe a 'black day' on July 1.
