India's Passenger Vehicle Sales Reach 4.3 Million Units in FY 2024-25; Utility Vehicles at 2.79 Million, Cargo Traffic Hits 146 Million Tonnes

India's passenger vehicle sales reached a record 4.3 million units in fiscal year 2024-2025, with the utility vehicle (UV) category accounting for 2.79 million units, representing 65% of the domestic market. The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R topped sales in this segment. This growth reflects a broader trend of increasing disposable incomes and access to credit, contributing to a shift toward premium vehicle purchases, particularly SUVs, which now make up over 50% of car sales in the country. The Indian middle class is playing a pivotal role in this economic transformation, particularly in discretionary spending on automobiles. Additionally, cargo traffic on National Waterways hit a record high of 146 million tonnes during the same fiscal year, showcasing a significant increase in the use of river transport for goods, driven by initiatives like the Jalvahak scheme and advancements in digital infrastructure.
