India has witnessed a significant increase in household spending over the past 12 years, with the per capita Monthly Household Consumption Expenditure more than doubling from 2011-12 to 2022-23. This surge in consumer spending encompasses various sectors, including clothing, televisions, and entertainment. The National Sample Survey Office (NSSO), under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, conducted the Household Consumption Expenditure Survey (HCES) from August 2022 to July 2023 to document these changes. The survey's findings highlight a broad increase in spending across both rural and urban sectors, states, and Union Territories, and among different socio-economic groups.
