Tensions between India and Pakistan have escalated following a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, Indian-administered Kashmir, on April 22, which killed 26 tourists, including 24 Hindus and 25 tourists. India has accused Pakistan of backing the attack, a claim Islamabad denies, suggesting a neutral international probe instead.
In response to the attack, India has taken several measures including the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty, closure of its airspace to Pakistani aircraft, and the expulsion of most Pakistani nationals from the country. Pakistan has countered by closing its airspace to Indian flights and suspending trade.
Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has sought mediation from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Kuwait to de-escalate tensions. Meanwhile, the United States has urged both countries to avoid conflict, with Vice President J.D. Vance calling for Pakistan's cooperation in hunting down the terrorists.
Military activities have intensified on both sides. Pakistan is conducting military exercises near the Line of Control (LoC) and in the Arabian Sea, while India has conducted a major flypast on the Ganga Expressway in Uttar Pradesh, involving Rafale, SU-30 MKI, and Mirage-2000 jets. Both nations have also engaged in naval exercises in the Arabian Sea, with the Indian Navy, including INS Surat equipped with the MR-SAM system capable of neutralizing aerial threats up to 70 km away, and the Indian Coast Guard near the Gujarat coast.
India is also working to counter Pakistan's narrative on terrorism at international forums like the UN Security Council and IMF, seeking global support and urging a review of loans to Pakistan. India has also approached the FATF to consider placing Pakistan on its grey list over concerns related to terror financing. Amid these tensions, India has blocked the social media accounts of several Pakistani figures, including Information Minister Attaullah Tarar. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has vowed swift action, and the National Investigation Agency has taken over the investigation, focusing on the roles of Lashkar-e-Taiba and its proxy, The Resistance Front.
