India has officially confirmed for the first time that it lost fighter jets during a brief conflict with Pakistan in May 2025. Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan acknowledged the losses, emphasizing the importance of understanding the reasons for the losses rather than the numbers. The conflict, which lasted four days, was triggered by the Pahalgam terror attack in Indian-administered Kashmir on April 22, 2025.
During the hostilities, India launched Operation Sindoor, targeting Pakistani military assets. According to Indian military sources and ongoing technical assessments, the Indian Air Force destroyed between five and six Pakistani fighter jets, one C-130 transport aircraft, at least one AWACS (Airborne Early Warning and Control System) aircraft, and over ten unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAVs), including Chinese Wing Loong drones. Multiple Pakistani cruise missiles were also intercepted or destroyed. Notably, the Bhoolari airbase was struck, resulting in the loss of an AWACS and additional assets, with the Sudarshan missile reportedly used in long-range strikes.
Indian officials have stated that a detailed technical assessment of the damage inflicted on Pakistani assets, including aircraft and radar systems, will be made public soon. The conflict ended with a ceasefire on May 10, after Pakistan requested to halt hostilities, following heavy losses. More than 70 people were reported killed in missile, drone, and artillery fire. Indian sources also noted that some Indian jets crashed on home soil and that tactical mistakes were made and addressed during the conflict, which saw intense action within an eight-hour period.
Pakistan admits that during the Bhoolari attack, the Indian side caused severe damage to a Pakistan Air Force AWACS aircraft, which is a greater loss than even five Rafale aircraft. The hangar where this missile struck also suffered a significant loss of PAF life, which has been
