India's coal sector has seen significant developments, with Union Minister @JoshiPralhad releasing a 'Strategy Paper on Coal Import Substitution' aimed at reducing import dependency and enhancing domestic production. The country has achieved a milestone by surpassing last year's coal production of 893.19 million tons (MT) twenty-seven days in advance, reaching over 900 million tons during the fiscal year 2023-24. Additionally, the Coal Ministry released the 'Coal Directory of India 2022-23,' providing comprehensive data on the coal and lignite sector for the fiscal year 2022-23. Efforts to diversify coal CPSEs towards a sustainable energy ecosystem include establishing pit-head TPPs, solar power plants, wind mills, coal/lignite gasification plants, and critical mineral exploration. The coal sector recorded the highest growth among the eight core industries in January 2024, with an index of 218.9 points, reflecting a 10.2% growth and a cumulative index increase of 12.2%. Coal India Limited (CIL) also achieved a record production of 703.91 MT up to March 7, 2024, surpassing the previous financial year's production of 703.20 MT. In efforts to increase energy security, a panel of Indian officials has recommended adjustments to the carbon tax on coal, advocating for an increase for imported coal and a decrease for domestically produced coal.
