Foxconn Pulls 300 Chinese Engineers From India, Imperiling Apple’s iPhone 17 Plans

Foxconn Technology Group has recalled hundreds of Chinese engineers and technicians from its iPhone assembly plants in southern India over the past two months, people familiar with the matter said, dealing a setback to Apple Inc.’s fast-growing manufacturing base in the country.

More than 300 Chinese staff have already left, leaving mainly Taiwanese support personnel on site. Their departure is expected to slow the transfer of manufacturing know-how and cut line efficiency just as Foxconn and Apple prepare to ramp up production of the forthcoming iPhone 17, though sources said product quality should remain intact.

India has become a critical hub for Apple’s diversification away from China, accounting for roughly one-fifth of global iPhone output. Apple assembled about $22 billion worth of iPhones in the country in the 12 months to March and aims to produce most handsets for the US market there by 2026. Foxconn is also constructing a new facility in Tamil Nadu to support the expansion.

Foxconn has not explained the recall, but it follows Beijing’s recent verbal guidance discouraging technology transfers and the export of skilled labour to rivals such as India and Vietnam. New Delhi says it is monitoring the situation and that manufacturers remain free to source talent abroad, including from Taiwan, as it seeks to safeguard its electronics-manufacturing ambitions.
