A devastating fire at the New Born Baby Care Hospital in Delhi's Vivek Vihar on May 25 resulted in the deaths of seven newborns. The hospital, which was operating with an expired license and lacked proper fire safety measures, including fire exits and extinguishers, has come under scrutiny. The owner, Dr. Naveen Khichi, and the on-duty doctor, Dr. Akash, have been arrested and remanded to police custody until May 30. The fire service and police rescued 12 infants, with six confirmed dead and one more in critical condition. The hospital had previously faced accusations of abuse and was found to be unregistered. The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has taken cognizance of the incident, and an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire, initially suspected to be an oxygen cylinder explosion.
